On Saturday afternoon the Gunners trek to the East Midlands city of ‘And Leicester’ in search of the grail of high-calibre consistency.  As a wise old soul once said, you can’t win the title unless you pound the lower league clubs like Leicester into submission.  Another test of this famous maxim stares us in the face.

In this, their first of 15 remaining league fixtures, the Arsenal will look to expand on the platform they built last week in their dramatic 4-2 victory at Villa Park, which followed a rough patch of four straight winless games in league and cup.  Their top-of-the-table stay had been interrupted before Arsenal’s come-from-behind win and Manchester City’s late concession at Forest restored the Gunners’ lead to two points with a game in hand.

The most worrying part of the four game rough patch was that opposition managers seemed to have exposed Arsenal’s Achilles heel, and begun to copy each other’s tactics.  Even Pep Guardiola borrowed from the Sean Dyche playbook, deploying Bernardo Silva to kick Saka off the park in the league fixture as Arsenal limited Citeh to 37% possession but couldn’t handle their quick counterattacks that turned the game.  Mikel Arteta will have been thinking about these things, and let’s hope we see some new growth popping up out of the frozen ground, as it were.

As Art de Roché wrote in The Athletic about last week’s match, Arsenal’s uneven performance left unanswered questions defensively “but they proved they can slug it out, and every league title winner needs to do that occasionally.  With a week until they return to action against Leicester City, the focus moves to raising their levels for 90 minutes, not just a half.”  Such a sustained and determined display is exactly what the players and fans need to recognize the steel of champions as the title race gets serious.

‘And Leicester’

As a supporter from afar, for years I wondered about the meaning of the phrase “And Leicester” — which those of you in the know used to toss around loosely in the old Goonerholic bar as if anybody reading it would fall down dying in hysterical laughter.  Once or twice I even looked up the phrase to see if I could learn its meaning without revealing myself as a neophyte but my searches came up with little useful information.  To my surprise, when I looked it up this time I found a comment by a Leicester fan, ‘Pork Pie Fox’ by name, recalling a theory about the inspiration of a song that was sung (probably still is) by Arsenal supporters headed to the East Midlands.  This Pork Pie fella recalled that “when fans from London headed north the signs on the road used to say ‘The North and Leicester’ and it basically came from there.”

“We all follow the Arsenal,

Over land and sea, and Leicester!

We all follow the Arsenal,

Onto victory!”

Should we win on Saturday or even if we don’t, each and all should raise a glass to Dave Faber, the Goonerholic himself, who chimed in on this question in his Aug. 30, 2014 preview entitled “And Leicester” (of course).  The great man wrote: “I have waited until the final whistle has blown at Goodison before considering the preview of our trip to Leicester, hereinafter to be compulsorily referred to as And Leicester, in honour of the song we amended in the early seventies. Quite why things got so lively at And Leicester, both when we played there and when venturing further north through the station, I’m not entirely sure.”

For those of a certain age, the actual destination upon arrival in Leicester was Filbert Street, rather than the King Power Stadium of today so I looked for an apt picture of the old ground.  As I was leafing through scrapbooks I got sidetracked by this photo of Martin Keown, the man our roving correspondent c100 spotted last week in the TV studio atop the lower stand at Villa Park.  Well, that’s Keown in the photo remonstrating while Robbie Savage lies in an ignominious heap with grass-stained posterior pointing skyward (Lee Dixon offering moral support) in a nil-nil draw played at Filbert Street 22 years ago.

The Opposition

Earlier in the season it looked like Leicester might not even be a Premier League away day destination next year seeing as they were mired in the relegation spaces.  After eight matches played they were dead last in the table, and did not win their first league game until October 3rd, but three wins each in October and November saw them rise to mid-table relative comfort.  Recently, the former denizens of Filbert Street haven’t been doing too badly either, as relatively struggling teams that are about to play the Arsenal tend to improve suddenly for some reason.  In the last month the Foxes have not only won more often than not, they racked up the goals for fun in their 2-4 win at Villa on February 4th and in their hilarious 4-1 demolition of Tottenham Shitespur the following week, before last Sunday’s 3-0 defeat Old Trafford left them 14th in the table but only five points out of the relegation places.

I turned on Leicester’s game against the Red Mancs in the 65th minute, only to find that the match was effectively over as a contest, with the score 3-0 and the atmosphere languid.  In the next 35 minutes no Leicester player impressed unduly and the match ended without further scoring.  The commentators said Leicester played well in the first half and could have gone ahead if not for two excellent saves, but no doubt they are saving their luck for this week’s game, and the Gunners had best beware not to be ambushed again as they were at Everton.

Arsenal XI and All That Dough

Taking a punt that Lonestar may have been on to something last week when he wrote in this space that Vieira would start at Villa, I’m going out on a limb to predict that the man from Feira will start against the Foxes.  Xhaka must need a rest eventually, after all.  It is a bit easier to see the Portuguese starting after his assist on Gaby’s game-clincher at Villa, and in the light of his interview on the Arsenal official website, “Vieira on improving and adapting to life in London” — featured during the week.  But speaking of Feira as I was, Vieira’s home town has celebrated the fogaçeiras since the Middle Ages when people offered the fogaça, a sweet roll, to their patron saint to rid the region of the plague.  If Vieira scores the winning goal at Leicester, here’s what we’ll all be baking on Saturday night:

Other than the insertion of Vieira, the team that started at Villa should be the same one we see this week, with Xhaka still available if we need to tweak our personnel at any point.

Ramsdale

White — Saliba — Gabriel — Zinchenko

Ødegaard — Jorginho — Vieira

Saka — Nketiah — Martinelli

The ‘holics pound

Arsenal to win is only available at oddschecker at 3/4 odds so if you want a challenge you might look at Martinelli to score first, which is available at 17/2.  Odd(s)ly, the odds for either Trossard or Smith Rowe (!) to score first are slightly lower, with both of them listed at 8/1.  I didn’t check the odds but a punt on Vieira to score first should also earn you some kneaded dough.  Curiously enough, each of Trossard, Smith Rowe and Vieira features in his own solo picture among this week’s 19 training photos on the official club website, so make of that what you will.  Disclaimer: Apologies if I misinterpreted the odds above, but I have hardly ever looked at those websites.

But Arsenal to win sounds reasonable enough given a decent performance by our players and also by the men in the odd-colored shirts: Craig Pawson (referee) and Michael Salisbury (VAR).

Enjoy the game, ‘holics, and those who will be making the trek to ‘And Leicester’ please be sure that we can hear your voices across the pond!!

Excellent preview BT8. I’ve only ever known “and Leicester” from the song on the terraces. Can any of our more mature contributors explain why the words were added to the song?
Hoping we don’t get a post contractual signing blip from Saka. It can happen. I’m sure he’s too much of a good guy.
Looking forward to the game. 3 pm Saturday kick off! How very retro. I assume our roving reporter C100 is going. Looking forward to a win and a scran report of quality.

“kneaded dough”, ha! well in, bt8, and i imagine you have set the stage for some trev-level bread punning here in the drinks. we’ll see if anyone rises to the occasion.

and leicester, i had to look that one up and somehow found a picture of the road sign in question, apparently on the m1 out of london. i do wish the right reverend al would make an appearance these days on this site, too.

i like the idea of vieira in there for xhaka, i also like the idea of zinchenko in there for zhaka and tierney starting at left back. so long as saka isn’t forced into enduring too many ankle-bruisers (that’s on you, mr. pawson), i expect he will score a brace. i hope we get at them early and often, and that the tremulous expression of “banana skin” stays well behind the couch.

    Pangloss says:

    Excellent stuff, bt8.

I had always assumed that “and Leicester” was a reference to a marathon FA Cup, with Leicester being the venue for a 2nd or 3rd replay. However, I can;t think which game it was, and a quick check on the FA Cup semifinal v Liverpool in 1980 reveals that after the 1-1 draw I attended at Villa Park in the second replay, the third replay was at Highfield Road. I’m sure someone will be along in a moment to correct me.

    North Bank Ned says:

You sustain the eclecticism of our previews excellently, bt8.

We probably need to be baking fogaça before the game to ward off Vardy, a similar pestilence to the plague.

My 2 cents is that Arteta will start the team that started against Villa, so Trossard, not Martinelli on the left ahead of Xhaka, not Vieira.

And while we are addressing the great metaphysical questions of life, ‘the North and Leicester’? Really? Have the road signs that said Hatfield and the North been airbrushed out of history?

  5. 5
    North Bank Ned says:

We get to know our Europa League opponent on Friday morning. The entry of the clubs falling out of the CL via the playoffs creates a distorted draw for the knock-out rounds. As an EL group winner, we will get one of Juventus, Sporting, Bayer Leverkusen, Sevilla, Union Berlin, Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk. The red Mancs, who were runners-up in their EL group, will get one of Fenerbahce, Ferencvaros, Feyenoord, Freiburg, Real Betis, Real Sociedad or Union Saint-Gilloise. I know they had to beat Barca in a play-off, but our pot of potential Round of 16 opponents looks a lot tougher than theirs.

  6. 6
    ClockEndRider says:

Ned @4, ‘Hatfield and the North” is what I always remember seeing in the M1 road signs as we trundled north t9 my aunts house outside And Leicester, where we would go t9 Filbert Street t9 see whoever the Fixes were playing.
The road signs were famoypusly the Iispiration for an earlier incarnation of the band of the great Ian Dury and the Blockheads.

  7. 7
    North Bank Ned says:

Bath, you are thinking of the FA Cup 3rd round 2nd, 3rd and 4th replays against Sheffield Wednesday the season before the Liverpool marathon. All three were played at Filbert Street in January 1979.

  8. 8
    North Bank Ned says:

    Oops, not bath, Pangloss.

  9. 9
    OsakaMatt says:

It was Sheffield Wednesday I think Pangloss. The old Filbert Street ground had a crap view is about all I can remember of it. Last time I went there Alan Smith was playing for them not us!

Anyway, thanks bt8, great stuff and it’s just as you say this is the sort of game where we need to grind out a result. I think it will be a little tougher than Villa as last weeks blip aside And Leicester have been playing well. We will need to be better defensively this week
but given the players have had a week’s rest I am expecting the usual XI.

    OsakaMatt says:

Apologies Ned, the monks moved more quickly than me 😀

    OsakaMatt says:

    @2 scruz
I think you may be right about the puns, anyway my hard earned crust is on a 2-1 win.

Hope the reports of a new contract for Bukayo are correct, we’ve been getting the players signed up slowly but surely and a well done to Edu and the team as this was (for me) the most important one. Though I am highly doubtful Saka will get any protection from the ref,
as I was saying to young Osaka “ I expect the ref will be poor son, but the var guy Salisbury fair”

  12. 12
    Pangloss says:

    Thanks Ned, Matt

  14. 14
    Sancho Panza says:

Great preview but I am not convinced ‘And Leicester’ has anything to do with road signs and more to do with a tongue in cheek place in comparison with the rest of the world. That and it having two syllables to fit in before the next line is sung. Two syllables, that is unless you’re an American tourist in London.

It was certainly sung by a lot of Southern football fans in the late seventies and eighties and was often a added as a riposte by those not singing the ‘We all follow ..’ main part. Oh to be a conductor with a baton.

Hoping for an easier win tomorrow.

  15. 15
    Bathgooner says:

A cracking preview, bt8. I have seen the sign: ‘The North and Leicester’ which was situated close to the Brent Cross supermarket either on the North Circular turn off or at the beginning of the M1. That is indeed the inspiration for the footnote to the song.

I am not yet convinced that Vieira is ready to start in the midfield in a PL game so I expect to see Xhaka retain his starting place particularly if Partey continues to be absent. I do agree that Martinelli will regain his starting position with a willing Trossard replacing him in the late second half.

    Good proto-news on Saka’s contract.

    Just win, Arsenal!

  16. 16
    bt8 says:

Thanks to all for reading and commenting in the drinks.

Excellent news on Saka’s contract, assuming it’s going to be finalized.

An interesting if tricky EL draw in Sporting Lisbon. I can’t wait.

  17. 17
    TTG says:

Another of your super previews Bt8 many thanks .
I arrive to find Pangloss’s question dealt with by Ned and Matt. That was a remarkable tie. I remember watching the Highbury replay with one of my oldest friends, a Sheffield Wednesday fan. Brady equalised from a Stapleton lay-off in the last minute of injury time. The next two ties were epics with goals galore but we finally took them down 2-0 in the fourth replay . Jackie Charlton was the Wednesday manager and his team were as obdurate as he was. After beating them just before the fourth round we disposed of Notts County at Highbury on the Saturday . By this time we had played enough games to have won the Cup. Thankfully we did win the Cup that season , the highlight being an away win at Forest who never lost at home and then the ‘five minute final ‘ at Wembley . I loved that period of our history .
Tomorrow we won’t start Vieira . The issue is if we start Partey or put him on the bench . With two home games in the following week we may have to rotate slightly but I think the usual suspects will figure tomorrow. I was impressed with Vieira’s short contribution but Arteta won’t fling him in ahead of Granit
I think we will win narrowly.Maddison is the danger . Travel safely those going

  18. 18
    OsakaMatt says:

A reunion with Hector in Lisbon awaits in the EL.

Quite agree with TTG, Maddison will be the main danger though I noticed old accidental elbow coming off the bench for And Leicester last week.

  19. 19
    Countryman100 says:

What a great preview! This was one of the best away days last year, with a memorable save by Ramsdale from James Maddison ensuring our 2-0 win. Harvey Barnes gave us a few problems in the second half. Leicester is our closest game, only just over the hour, and yes, CER, we’ll be there on Saturday.

  20. 20
    Lonestar Gooner says:

Excellent preview, bt8! I would love to see Vieira start (cheers for the shoutout), but I reckon most members will need to be patient and await the return of the Europa League for their chances in the spotlight.

Unlike the overwhelming sentiment I read elsewhere, I’d rather us take our sweet time reintroducing Jesus to the fray. Reports of his resurrection may yet be premature.😉

Let’s control the game, press our advantage, and take all three points.

    Win the next (this) match!

    MCMBD.

  21. 21
    Ollie says:

Cheers, bt8. I’ll take a Dennis Bergkamp hat-trick for the win.

  22. 22
    North Bank Ned says:

Sporting Lisbon isn’t the worst of Europa League draws, but by no means an easy game. The bookies have us second favourites to win the competition outright after the Red Mancs, who, despite my foreboding @5, probably face a larger banana skin in Real Bettis.

Bath@15: Thank you for some eye-witness evidence. It makes sense that the sign would be near the start of the M1, Hatfield being up the A1. As the most northerly Midlands city along the motorway, Leicester would be the logical waymarker to the North. I am curious if the sign you remember used an ‘and’ or an ampersand, which is not the practice of UK road signage. Or does the mind’s eye insert one?

CER@6: Kilburn and the High Roads, surely?

  23. 23
    TTG says:

Since Mrs TTG has discovered a bloodline to Richard III she has been suggesting a trip to Leicester but at the same time seems implacably opposed to popping into the King Power tomorrow! We got well beaten at Leicester under Emery but Arteta masterminded a good 3-1 win followed by the game C100 refers to above . We also won a Carabao Cup tie there .
They have some fine players and bought well in the last two windows but United schooled them in the second half . Lots of dangermen lurk but our wing power may rip them to shreds

  24. 24
    Trev says:

    Great stuff, bt8 !

Having stood on the North Bank singing the And Leicester song every week for years, I have to say I thought Sancho Panza’s explanation is spot on.

Pangloss, I went to all those Liverpool cup replays and there was indeed none at Filbert Street.

As for bread puns, I’ve been scratching me loaf to try to come up with a good one but nothing you’ll be split-tin yer sides over yet.

  25. 25
    Lonestar Gooner says:

I have it on good authority Jesus only needs one loaf to feed multitudes…

However, I’m afraid bread and fish might make for terrible footy scran.

    Geesh, I need a drink.

    MCMBD.

    Doctor Faustus says:

    Excellent preview bt8!

I don’t want to use, or even think about, the “T” word at this stage of the season. Next match is all that matters. As you can see, I am taking my inspiration from the team. 🙂

An unchanged starting eleven from the Villa victory is likeliest. A fully fit Partey for Jorginho and/or Gabi back again for Trossard may be the only surprises, unsurprisingly so.

    Come on Arsenal!

  31. 31
    ClockEndRider says:

Ned @22- you are of course right. Apologies for the error. I put it down to ageing. Of course, I remember when it was all fields round here….

  32. 32
    Bathgooner says:

C100 @28, those salmon bagels were one of the very classy elements of going to watch football at THOF. The exclusive merchandising deals that were done when we moved to the Grove shut the bagel sellers out and introduced the execrable muck that is now sold at that venue. Another thing I lament about the way football has gone in the last 20 years.

  33. 33
    Bathgooner says:

Ned @22, I am afraid that I cannot recall whether it was and, an ampersand or merely:

    The North
    Leicester.

  34. 34
    Ollie says:

I seem to have recollection of the North (West?) & Birmingham but that’s because I was mostly driving to Birmingham (1996-1997 though, I don’t know what is ‘old’ these days).
There are (were?) certainly a lot of signs indicating a general direction and a city on Motorways when driving from London. So no idea.
Just hope tonight we can say: over the past eight days we beat Aston Villa. And Leicester.

  35. 35
    bt8 says:

Aptly said, Ollie. Seeing as there rumors that we will have a striker on the day, maybe the evening papers will have this headline:

Ollie & Bath: The UK road signage seen today got standardised and colour coded (blue for motorway signs, green for primary roads, brown for tourist information &c) in the early 70s, with places stacked as Bath remembers and regions capitalised, eg
    The NORTH
    Leicester
On the rare occasion where two places are on a single line, they are separated by a comma. ‘Comma Leicester’ doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

  40. 40
    OsakaMatt says:

And Maddison is out for Leicester, which is handy.

Thanks for another great preview bt8. No easy matches in the EPL but hopeful of another good way trip for C100. Their defence is not the best so our boys should be capable of 2 goals ( or more ) – our defence will need to be less generous that last week at Villa.
It’ll be interesting to see how Gabi fares as CF maybe some inter-changing with LT19 May come into play.

Unclear not to mention unobvious on my screen after how many viewings?

No matter. Just keep on doing what we’re doing. Brenda may try some adjustments but we have options on the bench if needed. Patience and persistence will win the day.

Pawson has had some decent games this season eg, the NLD but he was hopeless today .
I’m really struggling to see why our goal was disallowed, why if that was disallowed Saka was not given a pen just after and I note that MOTD failed to feature our offside goal but showed theirs and also failed to expose Vardy as a thug..But they did show that they scarcely troubled us – .02 xG at home ? And they are dependent on Maddison to a significant degree. I think he could be an 8 for us but he is too injury prone

  73. 73
    OsakaMatt says:

Enjoying my Sunday morning coffee and after a quick fact-check of bt8 @70 I can confirm he is right….. we ARE top of the league! 😀

I must admit to some flashbacks to previous defeats when Vardy came on but bt8 was also right that present day Vardy is irrelevant and I wouldn’t be surprised if he calls it a day at the end of the season. Perhaps And Leicester can give him relegation as a going away present. Minus Maddison they were toothless and completely lacking in any ambition for most of the game, spineless fare to offer up to your home support.

  74. 74
    OsakaMatt says:

Your first paragraph is spot on TTG, how Martinelli ends up as the only booking in that game is just ridiculous.

At the risk of being scorned as an establishment toady I must admit that I thought Ben did foul their keeper and the call was fair.

TTG@72: I can see why VAR would rule out Trossard’s goal on a technicality although White’s foul would not be given 99 times out of 100 in any circumstance that was not a VAR review. But if that is the standard being applied then the foul on Saka not being called as a penalty is inexplicable.

Just saw an interview with Arteta asking about Zin wearing the captain’s band and apparently it was request by the players, initiated by Odegaard. Love this team!

    Great result.

I think it was fair enough to disallow the goal due to White holding the keeper (don’t do it Ben!) but, if that’s the standard, then a penalty has to be given when Saka gets hauled down.

Inconsistent and incontinent – the PGMOL motto.

Also, what ecg said @ 76

Just rewatched MotD. I have no problem with the disallowed goal except a) it was a lovely strike that curled into the top corner and deserved to count and b) the number of cases of holding or blocking that are never called or reviewed in the build up of other goals. Even Leicester fan and ex-Spud Lineker thought it was ‘very strange to overturn that with VAR’. Ben is a very naughty boy as Monty Pytthon would have said. At least Trossard got a very cheeky nutmeg assist for Martinelli’s fine winner.

I thought Jorginho put on a masterclass performance in midfield underlining what a great bit of January business we have done. He is far too influential on game management to sit on the bench when both Partey and Xhaka are fit and I expect that we will see him regularly in either of those two positions as Arteta uses his three top class midfielders to maximum effect in the run in. Both Jorginho and captain for the day, Zinchenko produced a huge number of penetrating progressive passes that our forwards should really have made more of.

A word for Gabriel and Saliba. Imperious!

I spotted Ben White holding a hammie towards the end and expect Tomi to start on Wednesday.

Good work, Arsenal but it’s time you turned possession and game control into a thrashing.

And as much as it’s scandalous that neither the referee, the linesman nor the two VAR officials called the rugby tackle that grounded Saka in front of goal as a penalty, it is also scandalous that the stamp (that looks deliberate) by Ndidi on Martinelli after he scores his goal was not punished.

I’m with Baff on Jorginho. He looks like an excellent signing. Very classy, composed. He put Saka through with a peach of a pass yesterday that unfortunately led to nowt. But he’s been really good in red.

Yeah, great post, Baff at 80.
Also spotted White clutching his hamstring, it is a bit of a worry.

Thanks for attaching Mike’s very insightful blog on yesterday. I think he surprisingly didn’t pick on the reason we are not converting at the level we were earlier – the absence of Gabriel Jesus. His mobility gave us much more fluidity and created many more opportunities. Or so it seemed . Since his absence it seems that Martinelli and Xhaka have been less effective . Maybe that’s just my imagination.m
I do agree about Jorginho. I have never studied him before and he’s an under the radar player but when he plays for your side you do notice what he does . And that’s plenty . He is more creative than Xhaka and I would put him into midfield in his place He was a fine buy and watching the pathetic Chav display this afternoon you wonder how on Earth they sold him to us.
Seeing Mudryk and Auba come on looking like they were going for colonic irrigation was strangely satisfying .
