Lift your spirits by watching the second episode of two video conversations with Bob Wilson and Pat Rice about Arsenal’s 1970-71 Double year, on the 50th Anniversary of our FA Cup win over Liverpool at Wembley.

In this episode we have Peter LeBeau and Paul Brooker from GHF.com discussing with Bob and Pat the 1971 FA Cup campaign and completing the Double.

As this commemoration is in support of the Willow Foundation, if you watch and enjoy the video (or even if you don’t!), donate whatever you can to Willow. Or, check out the GHF.com Auction for Double-related memorabilia, and bid on the lot(s) you’d most like to have! All proceeds from the auction go to the Willow Foundation.

Shame Sheffield Weds have gone down because of a points deduction, when the so-called Big Six have had wrist slapping fines of around £5m from UEFA and no punishment from the Premier League for attempting to wreck the football pyramid.

I get the argument that points deductions would punish the fans, but nobody seems to care about the fans at clubs who have been hit with deductions and, in the past, demotions for various misdeeds at board level.

I would very much like to see a points deduction for the so-called Big Six, but it’s not going to happen at this late stage. Ten points off would knock United and Chelsea out of the top four, as it stands, and end the hopes of both Spurs and Liverpool for European football next season. It wouldn’t really hurt Man City or the Arsenal much, but we’ve suffered enough anyway…

    Bathgooner says:

Here’s a vignette about that ’70-71 team that illustrates something that is missing from the current team – and indeed hasn’t been at all evident in any Arsenal side in recent seasons. A winning mentality.

It’s a quote from David Tossell’s ‘Seventy-one Guns’, the story of that first double, which I highly recommend. It’s from a league match at a point in the season when Arsenal’s league challenge had begun to wobble and the press had written them off.

‘Seven points behind Leeds after three away defeats and two less than convincing home wins in their previous five games,…two games in hand over Leeds were considered to be insignificant (2 points for a win in those days), especially as the first of them was another away game at high-flying Wolves.’

Arsenal surprised everyone by taking an early two goal lead through Ray Kennedy and John Radford.

‘Arsenal’s confidence was running so high that it prompted an incident late in the first half that (Bob) McNab remembers clearly. “We were 2-0 up and playing unbelievably. It was just one of those games where we ran them off the park. Five minutes before half-time the ball comes to Pat Rice on the edge of the box. He is trying to look composed and he’s done a drag back at the edge of the box and lost it. Peter Storey races over to Ricey, and me and Bob Wilson have to pull Peter off him. I had run over there to strangle Pat as well but I had to be a mediator. I thought Peter was going to kill him and the blood ran out of Ricey’s face. He never did that again in all his career.”‘

That was a team with desire and proper in-game quality control.

And what was your opinion of the history we are savouring ?

  6. 6
    Countryman100 says:

    Wonderful story!

    TTG says:

It’s hard to see a Storey figure in our current team . Let alone a Mclintock ! Pat didn’t mention the drag back did he ? 😀

  8. 8
    Countryman100 says:

I didn’t know drag backs had been invented in 1971!

  9. 9
    Bathgooner says:

C100 @6, I did feel for Pat, now of course a much respected, heavily decorated legend but then only 21 years old, in his break-through season and faced with an incandescent Snouty who had previously held that position. No wonder he never did that again!

  10. 10
    Cynic says:

Not watched it TG, sorry. I know I should, but I’m not in the mood for wallowing in the past. Which is unusual. But like the past, it’s not going anywhere so I will get around to it. Probably post season when the absence of all football really bites.

If you mean in general and memories from 1971, I adored Charlie George. That’s about all I remember.

    Uplympian says:

Another brilliant watch – memories come flooding back from those times of 50 years ago.
I started my first job when the neighbours from Middlesex won their double in 1961 and of course there were Spu*s supporters there to taunt me – a bunch of arrogant gob-shites each and every one of them. How sweet to complete our own double 10 years later with the fantastic bonus of winning the league at their dump.
Listening to Bob & Paul restores one’s faith in the integrity & spirit of people. This was admirably drawn out by TTG & Countryman100 along with great behind the scenes work from Scruz & Bathgooner. My thanks go to you all for putting on a magnificent show for us and I hope people tuning in will support the Willow Foundation – a great charitable clause.
